Discover more about Castle Loppem

Kasteel van Loppem, or Loppem Castle, is a captivating mansion located in Zedelgem, near Bruges, in the Flemish Region of Belgium. Built for Baron Charles van Caloen and his wife, Countess Savina de Gourcy Serainchamps, between 1858 and 1862, it stands as one of the best-preserved examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in Belgium. The castle replaced an earlier 18th-century mansion and was designed by English architect Edward Welby Pugin and Jean-Baptiste de Béthune, who gave it its distinctive Flemish Gothic Revival appearance. The interior of Kasteel van Loppem is richly decorated and furnished, housing a diverse collection of art, including paintings, stained glass, and statuary. The painting collection showcases the evolution of art in the Low Countries, from Flemish Primitives to 19th-century works. The library boasts a superb collection of printed works, emblem books, and prints dating back to the 16th century. The surrounding romantic park, designed by Jean Gindra in the English landscape style, features ponds, grottoes, and a maze created in 1873. The park invites visitors to wander along winding paths, discovering picturesque vistas and remarkable trees. The castle and park have been owned by the Stichting Jean van Caloen since 1952 and have been open to the public since 1975. Kasteel van Loppem briefly served as a significant site during World War I when King Albert I and his family resided there, and it became the command center for the Belgian army.
