Aische-en-Refail Castle, or Château d'Aische-en-Refail, is a captivating ruin located in the Walloon region of Belgium. The castle's origins trace back to the 12th century when it was constructed on the lands of the Refayt family. In 1462, the Vaulx de Refayt family consolidated their power by uniting the castle and surrounding estates, forming the seigniory of Aische. Over the centuries, the castle passed through various hands, including the Du Bois family in 1647. Between 1760 and 1780, Simon de Neuf expanded the castle, adding wings, raising the tower, and widening the moats. However, after 1830, the castle was no longer permanently inhabited, and by 1865, it was abandoned. War and new ownership led to its partial demolition, with materials repurposed or sold. Today, Aische-en-Refail Castle stands as a ruin, offering visitors a unique glimpse into its medieval past. Although the castle is not always open, the exterior remains a stunning sight, surrounded by greenery that enhances its picturesque charm. Visitors can wander through the remnants of its grand structures, imagining the stories that unfolded within its walls. The site is listed as a monument since 1977 and 1982.
