The Slagmolen itself is a historic water mill dating back to 1523, the oldest building in Genk. In November 2020, Tourism Flanders acquired the mill with the aim of revitalizing it as a gateway to the De Maten and the Stiemerbeek Valley. While the mill undergoes renovation, Natuurpunt Genk operates an outdoor bar in a heated tent in the garden, offering refreshments and a warm welcome to visitors. De Maten is a 536-hectare nature reserve characterized by a chain of ponds created centuries ago by damming the Stiemerbeek and Heiweierbeek. These ponds were historically used for fish farming, and today the area is a haven for diverse flora and fauna, including various waterbirds and plant species like cotton grass and sundew. The landscape also features forests and heathland, offering varied hiking experiences. The area is protected as a Natura 2000 site, recognizing its importance for biodiversity.
