Discover more about Fortified castle of Solre-sur-Sambre

The Fortified Castle of Solre-sur-Sambre is a remarkable example of medieval military architecture in the Hainaut region of Belgium. Constructed in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, the castle was commissioned by the Lords of Barbençon. Its strategic location near the confluence of the Thure and Sambre rivers and near an enclave of the Principality of Liège, allowed it to defend the border. The castle retains its quadrilateral layout, complete with circular towers at each corner. The south side features an imposing keep-porch that provides access to the inner courtyard. Over the centuries, the castle has been owned by several prominent families, including the Barbençon, Carondelet, Mérode, and Wignacourt families. Jean Carondelet modified the front towers around 1500, adding conical towers. Today, the castle is owned by Prince Amaury de Mérode and is not open to the public. However, visitors can still appreciate the castle's architecture by taking a walk along the path that runs alongside the moats.
