Discover more about Pl. du Marché

Place du Marché, or Market Square, has been the heart of Liège for centuries. Its origins trace back to the city's early development around the 8th century. Throughout its history, the square has been a central point for civic life, commerce, and celebrations. The square is home to two major landmarks: the Perron and the Hôtel de Ville. The Perron, a monument dating back to the Middle Ages, symbolizes the city's communal freedoms. It was moved to Bruges in 1467 by Charles the Bold but was returned to Liège in 1477. The current Perron was rebuilt by Jean Del Cour in the late 17th century. The Hôtel de Ville, or Town Hall, is traditionally called 'La Violette'. The original building was destroyed in 1691 during a bombardment by Louis XIV's troops. The current classical-style building was constructed between 1714 and 1718. Today, Place du Marché continues to be a vibrant public space, hosting markets, events, and festivals. Its many cafes and brasseries offer places to relax and soak in the atmosphere.
