Place du Marché, the Market Square, stands as a vibrant testament to Liège's rich history and enduring spirit. As one of the city's oldest squares, its origins trace back to the very beginnings of Liège. Throughout the ages, it has served as the city's main forum, a bustling center of commerce and civic life. In 1691, the square was devastated by a bombing ordered by Louis XIV, leaving much of it in ruins. However, the people of Liège, known for their resilience, rebuilt the square in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The rebuilt square showcases a classic architectural style, arranged in a U-shaped plan. Local artists contributed to its decoration, adding to its unique charm. Today, Place du Marché is home to two of Liège's most iconic landmarks: the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) and the Perron. The Hôtel de Ville, also known as La Violette, was rebuilt between 1714 and 1718 after being damaged in the 1691 bombing. The Perron, a fountain adorned with sculptures, symbolizes Liège's communal liberties and can be found on the city's coat of arms. The current Perron is a reconstruction by Jean Del Cour, created after a storm toppled the original in 1693. The square is surrounded by charming old houses, many with half-timbered facades, adding to its picturesque appeal. The north side of the square is particularly lively, with numerous restaurants and bars offering outdoor seating. The south side is lined with various shops. Place du Marché continues to be a central gathering place for locals and tourists alike, hosting events such as the annual Christmas Village.
