Getting there

Car

If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. Head east on the Thimphu-Phuentsholing Highway (National Highway 2). After approximately 30 kilometers, you will reach Chhukha District. Look for the signs directing you towards Dzongdrakha Monastery. Follow the signs and take a left turn at the junction leading up the mountain to the monastery. The total driving distance from Thimphu to Dzongdrakha Monastery is about 70 kilometers, and it should take around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Please note that you may need to pay a toll fee of approximately 100 Nu (Bhutanese currency) along the highway.

Public Transportation

For travelers using public transportation, take a bus from Thimphu to Chhukha. Buses depart regularly from the Thimphu bus station and the fare is about 50 Nu. Once you arrive in Chhukha, you will need to hire a local taxi to take you to Dzongdrakha Monastery. The taxi ride will take approximately 30 minutes and should cost around 300-500 Nu. Ensure the taxi driver is familiar with Dzongdrakha Monastery as it is a popular destination.

Hiking

If you are adventurous and enjoy hiking, after reaching Chhukha by car or bus, you can choose to hike the remaining distance to Dzongdrakha Monastery. The hike is approximately 2 kilometers from the nearest road access point and will take about 30-40 minutes. Follow the well-marked trail, which is surrounded by beautiful scenery. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes and carry enough water and snacks for the journey.
