Discover more about Karađoz Beg Mosque

Karađoz Beg Mosque, also known as Karagöz Mehmed Bey Camii, is a 16th-century Ottoman mosque located in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built in 1557-58, it represents a significant example of Islamic architecture in the region. The mosque was commissioned by Mehmed Beg, the brother of a vizier, and may have been designed by the imperial architect Mimar Sinan. The mosque features a large dome and a tall minaret, making it one of the largest mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The structure consists of a domed cube fronted by a double portico. The inner portico's three domes are supported by four marble columns, while the outer portico has a shed roof resting on small octagonal pillars. Inside, visitors can admire the beautiful decorations and the spacious prayer hall. Severely damaged during World War II and facing near destruction during the Bosnian War in the early 1990s, the Karađoz Beg Mosque underwent extensive repairs between 2002 and 2004. It was completely renovated and reopened to the public in July 2004. Today, the mosque stands as a symbol of Mostar's rich cultural heritage and resilience. Visitors can explore the mosque, climb the minaret for panoramic views, and wander through the serene gardens. Behind the mosque lies the oldest Muslim cemetery in Mostar, where Karađoz Bey himself was buried in 1564.
