The Karađoz Beg Mosque, also known as Karagöz Mehmed Bey Camii, is a 16th-century Ottoman mosque located in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built in 1557-58, it is one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in the region, representing a significant example of Islamic architecture. The mosque was commissioned by Mehmed Beg, the brother of a vizier, and may have been designed by the imperial architect Mimar Sinan. Its design features a domed cube fronted by a double portico, with a large dome sitting on an octagonal drum supported by pointed arches. The interior is adorned with arabesques and phytomorphic drawings, reflecting the rich artistic heritage of the Ottoman period. The mosque complex also includes a washing shed (sadrvan), an Islamic school (madrasa), a library, and a public kitchen. Severely damaged during World War II and the Bosnian War in the early 1990s, the Karađoz Beg Mosque underwent extensive repairs between 2002 and 2004. It was completely renovated and reopened to the public in July 2004. Today, visitors can explore the mosque's serene gardens, admire its stunning calligraphy and tile work, and experience the spiritual atmosphere of this important cultural site. The mosque also offers panoramic views of Mostar from its minaret.
