Discover more about Kula Tara

Kula Tara, a historic tower in Mostar, watches over the eastern approach to the famous Old Bridge. Constructed in 1676, it replaced a wooden tower that had stood since the 11th century. For many years, until 1878, Kula Tara was used as a storehouse for gunpowder and ammunition, its thick walls ensuring the safety of the surrounding area. The tower's architecture is relatively simple, a robust rectangular structure with its longest side facing the bridge. The tower has four floors, offering an idea of its height. Windows punctuate the facade, providing light without excessive ornamentation. During the war in 1991, Kula Tara suffered significant damage, particularly on November 9, 1993, when the Old Bridge was destroyed. The tower lost its roof and some of its floors, and its walls were severely cracked. However, it was largely restored during the bridge's reconstruction and now houses the Museum of the Old Bridge (Muzej Stari Most). Today, visitors can explore the tower and learn about the history of the Old Bridge through videos and exhibits. The ground floor features a bookshop belonging to the Islamic Cultural Center. From the top of the tower, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Mostar's old town, the Neretva River, and the UNESCO-protected Old Bridge.
