Discover more about Kriva ćuprija

Kriva Ćuprija, meaning "Crooked Bridge," is a delightful, single-arch stone bridge located in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Constructed in 1558 during Ottoman rule, it stands as the oldest one-arch bridge in Mostar. The bridge was designed by Ottoman architect Ćejvan Ketoda. It is considered a miniature version, or even a test model, for the more famous Stari Most (Old Bridge). Located just 30 meters west of the Stari Most, Kriva Ćuprija gracefully spans the Radobolja River, a tributary of the Neretva. With its single, semi-circular arch reaching 8.56 meters in width and 4.15 meters in height, the bridge is a testament to the architectural style of the time. Stone steps lead up to the bridge on either side, and the pathway across is paved with cobblestones, blending seamlessly with the surrounding Old Town. Kriva Ćuprija played a vital role in connecting the trading area of the Old Town to Herzegovina and Dalmatia. Though it faced destruction in a flood in December 1999, it was reconstructed in 2003 with UNESCO's help, reinforcing the riverbanks. Today, Kriva Ćuprija is a protected cultural monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its outstanding universal significance. Visitors can appreciate the bridge's intricate stonework, enjoy the views, explore the nearby shops and cafes, and immerse themselves in Mostar's vibrant culture.
