Discover more about Old Bridge Mostar

Stari Most (Old Bridge) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a defining symbol of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1557, it was designed by Mimar Hayruddin, a student of the renowned architect Mimar Sinan. The bridge replaced a precarious wooden suspension bridge that once spanned the Neretva River. For over 400 years, Stari Most stood as a testament to Ottoman engineering and a vital link between communities on either side of the river. During the Croat-Bosniak War in 1993, the bridge was destroyed, an act that symbolized the destruction of shared heritage. The international community rallied to reconstruct the bridge, using the same materials and techniques as the original. It reopened in 2004, signifying reconciliation and unity. The bridge is a single-arch structure, 29 meters in length, 4 meters wide, and 24 meters high. It is made of local tenelija limestone. Today, visitors can stroll across the bridge, explore the surrounding Old City, and witness the tradition of bridge diving, where daring locals and trained professionals leap into the cold waters of the Neretva River below.
