Discover more about Blagaj Tekke

Blagaj Tekke, also known as the Dervish House, is a captivating monastery located in the village of Blagaj, near Mostar. Built around 1520, the Tekke stands as a testament to Ottoman architecture and the region's Sufi traditions. The monastery is uniquely positioned at the source of the Buna River, one of the largest and most pristine springs in Europe, adding to the site's mystique and tranquility. Historically, Blagaj was an important center even before the arrival of the Ottomans, with archaeological evidence suggesting a Late Antique structure existed here. The Tekke itself was built on the site of a former Bogomil sanctuary, further highlighting the area's long-standing religious significance. For centuries, it served as a gathering place for Dervishes, followers of a mystical branch of Islam known for their whirling dances and commitment to spiritual connection. Visitors to Blagaj Tekke can explore the monastery's various rooms, including the prayer room, guest house (musafirhana), and tombs. The interior features traditional Ottoman design elements, with intricate woodwork, embroidered rugs, and stone walls. However, the most breathtaking view is arguably from the opposite side of the Buna River, where the Tekke's white facade is framed by the towering cliff and the crystal-clear waters of the Buna. The site is open to visitors daily, and modest dress is required, with wraps and scarves available for free.
