Discover more about Ars Aevi

Ars Aevi, meaning 'Art of the Epoch' (a partial anagram of Sarajevo), stands as a testament to the power of art and the resilience of the human spirit. Founded in 1992 during the siege of Sarajevo, the museum emerged as a cultural resistance movement against the Bosnian War. The museum's inception involved inviting artists worldwide to donate their work, envisioning a future World Contemporary Art Museum in Sarajevo. The collection, now boasting approximately 150 works, includes pieces by renowned artists such as Michelangelo Pistoletto, Jannis Kounellis, Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramović, and Joseph Kosuth. These works were donated as a symbol of support for Sarajevo during the Siege and to build a collection for Sarajevo's museum of contemporary art. Today, it is considered one of the most important collections of modern art in Southeastern Europe. While the museum awaits its permanent home, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the collection is currently housed within the Sarajevo City Hall. Piano also designed the Ars Aevi pedestrian bridge, which connects the banks of the Miljacka River near the site of the future museum. Ars Aevi continues to evolve as a dynamic cultural center, offering exhibitions, educational initiatives, and digital projects.
