Discover more about Tašlihan

Tašlihan, meaning 'stone inn' in Turkish, was erected between 1540 and 1543 by Gazi Husrev-beg, a significant Ottoman governor, as part of his extensive contributions to Sarajevo. This caravanserai served as a vital lodging for merchants and travelers traversing the Ottoman Empire, providing refuge, shops, warehouses, and stables. Tašlihan, along with Morića Han and Kolobara Han, was one of Sarajevo's most important 'hans'. The structure boasted a rectangular design spanning 47 meters, featuring an inner courtyard with a fountain and a small mosque on its pillars. The ground floor housed shops and warehouses, while the upper level offered domed rooms for travelers. Tašlihan facilitated trade and passenger traffic, connecting domestic and foreign merchants. Unfortunately, Tašlihan suffered several fires during the 19th century, with the last major fire in 1879 leaving it in ruins. Most of the structure was removed by 1912, leaving only remnants of walls along the Gazi Husrev-beg Bezistan. Today, these remains are incorporated into the summer terrace of Hotel Evropa, allowing visitors to witness the stone foundations and imagine the inn's former splendor. Archaeological research in 1998 confirmed Tašlihan's historical significance, and the site is now protected as part of Sarajevo's cultural heritage. Visiting Tašlihan offers a unique opportunity to explore Ottoman architecture and urbanism, and to connect with Sarajevo's commercial past.
