Discover more about Ars Aevi

Ars Aevi, meaning "art of the epoch" (a partial anagram of Sarajevo), stands as a testament to the resilience and international solidarity during the Bosnian War. Founded in 1992 during the siege of Sarajevo, the museum emerged as a cultural resistance movement. A group of local enthusiasts, led by Enver Hadžiomerspahić, invited artists worldwide to donate their works, creating a collection for a future museum of contemporary art. The collection, now comprising around 150 works, includes pieces by renowned artists such as Michelangelo Pistoletto, Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramović, and Joseph Kosuth. These donations symbolize global artistic support for Sarajevo during a time of conflict. Ars Aevi's collection is considered one of the most important collections of modern art in Southeastern Europe. While the museum has organized exhibits in Sarajevo featuring prominent artists, the collection has been moved to the Sarajevo City Hall. A new museum building, designed by Renzo Piano, is planned to be built. Piano also designed the Ars Aevi pedestrian bridge, which connects the banks of the Miljacka River near the site of the future museum.
