Discover more about Emperor's Mosque

The Emperor's Mosque, or Careva Džamija, is a magnificent symbol of Sarajevo's rich cultural and spiritual heritage. As the first mosque constructed in the city following the Ottoman conquest, it occupies a hallowed place in the historical and cultural tapestry of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Originally built in 1457, the mosque was founded by Isa-Bey Ishaković. He dedicated it to Sultan Mehmed II “the Conqueror”. The original structure was a humble wooden building. However, it was destroyed by the end of the century. In 1565, under the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, the mosque was rebuilt in stone. Side rooms were added in 1800 and connected to the central prayer area in 1848. The mosque has been modernized and renovated throughout its history. Considered one of the most aesthetically refined Ottoman-era mosques in the Balkans, the mosque features a roomy interior and high-quality decorative details, including a glimmering mihrab. Its sweeping arches, intricate carvings, and expansive subdome embody the grandeur and sophistication of classical Ottoman architecture. The burial ground beside the mosque contains the graves of viziers, mullahs, imams, muftis, sheikhs and other prominent figures.
