Discover more about Sarajevo City Hall

Sarajevo City Hall, or Vijećnica, is one of the most recognizable symbols of Sarajevo. Constructed during the Austro-Hungarian period, between 1892 and 1894, it represents a blend of historical eclecticism, primarily the pseudo-Moorish style inspired by Islamic art from Spain and North Africa. The building's design was initially conceived by Czech architect Karel Pařík, but was later refined by Aleksandar Wittek and Ćiril Iveković. The City Hall has served various purposes throughout its history. It was originally the seat of the city's administration. Later, it housed the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the Siege of Sarajevo in 1992, the building was tragically set ablaze by Serb shelling, resulting in the destruction of nearly 90% of the library's collection, including irreplaceable manuscripts and historical documents. The City Hall was meticulously reconstructed, with the official reopening taking place on May 9, 2014, coinciding with Europe Day and the Day of Victory over Fascism. Today, the building hosts various events, including concerts, exhibitions, and sessions of the City Council. Visitors can explore the building's grand halls, admire its architectural details such as stained glass, elaborate arches and Islamic calligraphy, and visit exhibitions showcasing Sarajevo's history and cultural heritage. The City Hall also contains a history museum about the Siege of Sarajevo, and an international contemporary art collection.
