The Una River, named by the Romans who were captivated by its beauty, stretches 212 kilometers, bordering Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. The river's name, 'Una,' meaning 'one' or 'unique' in Latin, reflects its exceptional beauty. Its source lies within the Una National Park, established in 2008 to protect the pristine nature surrounding the Una, Krka, and Unac rivers. The river is characterized by its crystal-clear, emerald-green waters, a result of the travertine components in the water. The diverse ecosystem supports a variety of fish species, including trout, grayling, and huchen, making it a popular destination for fishing enthusiasts. The banks of the Una are home to over 170 types of medicinal herbs, adding to the river's natural richness. The Una's course is marked by numerous cascades, waterfalls, and rapids, with Štrbački Buk being the most famous waterfall, standing at approximately 24 meters. These natural features provide opportunities for rafting, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and canyoning. The International Una Regatta, a well-known kayak and rafting contest, is held annually, attracting tourists from across Europe. The river also holds cultural and historical significance, with ancient fortresses, medieval castles, and Ottoman-era bridges dotting its banks.
