Getting There

Car

From Serowe, head north on the A14 road towards Orapa. After approximately 25km, you will find the entrance to Khama Rhino Sanctuary on your left. The roads are generally well-maintained, and a 4x4 vehicle is not always necessary, especially during the dry season. However, an off-road vehicle is recommended during the rainy season. Vehicle fees are approximately P200 for vehicles under 5 tonnes. Park entrance fees are P160 per adult.
Public Transport

From the main bus station in Kgatleng District, take a bus to Paje. The journey takes approximately 2 hours. From Paje, you can hire a taxi or arrange for a shuttle service to Khama Rhino Sanctuary, which is about 5 kilometers away. Taxi fares from Paje to the sanctuary range from P20 to P50, depending on negotiation.

Khama Rhino Sanctuary, located 25km north of Serowe, Botswana, is a remarkable testament to community-led conservation efforts. Founded in 1989, the sanctuary arose from concerns about escalating rhino poaching and the need to protect these animals. Led by Lt. Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama and other conservationists, the sanctuary was established by the people of Serowe to provide a safe environment for rhinos to breed and thrive.The sanctuary's 8,585 hectares encompass Kalahari sandveld centered around Serwe Pan, a large grassy depression with natural waterholes. This diverse habitat supports both black and white rhinos, as well as a variety of other wildlife, including zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, antelopes, and an abundance of bird species. The Botswana Defence Force constantly patrols the perimeter of the sanctuary to ensure the rhinos are well protected.Khama Rhino Sanctuary has become a popular stopover for travelers and a destination for day visitors. Visitors can explore the sanctuary through guided game drives or self-drive safaris, offering the chance to encounter rhinos and other wildlife in their natural habitat. The sanctuary also features an education center, campsites, chalets, a restaurant, and a curio shop.
