Discover more about Cliff Trail Painting 1

The Cliff Trail Paintings are found within the Tsodilo Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northwest Botswana, often called the "Louvre of the Desert" due to its high concentration of ancient rock art. The hills consist of four main rock formations: Male, Female, Child, and North Hill. The Cliff Trail, primarily located on the Female Hill, presents a moderately challenging hike that leads visitors to a remarkable collection of prehistoric finger paintings. These paintings, created by the San people and later the Bantu people, showcase a range of subjects, including animals, human figures, and geometric designs. The red paintings are attributed to the San, while the white paintings are believed to be from the Bantu. The paintings offer insight into the spiritual and cultural practices of those who created them. Some images depict scenes of daily life, hunting, and rituals, providing a visual narrative of the past. The trail itself meanders along the base of steep cliffs, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The towering cliffs create a dramatic backdrop for the rock art, enhancing the overall experience. The Tsodilo Hills have been inhabited for approximately 100,000 years and hold deep spiritual significance for the San people, who believe the hills are the dwelling place of ancestral spirits.
