Praça do Cruzeiro holds a special place in the history of Brasília, Brazil. Situated at the highest point in the area chosen for the new capital, at 1,172 meters above sea level, it was a prime location to oversee the construction of Brasília. In April 1955, the area was selected as the site for building the new capital. The square derives its name and significance from the large cross ('cruzeiro' in Portuguese) that stands there. In May 1957, the first mass was celebrated on this site, marking a pivotal moment in the city's establishment. The original wooden cross is now permanently displayed inside the Catedral Nossa Senhora Aparecida in Brasília. The square's design is attributed to urban planner Lúcio Costa, with contributions from architect Oscar Niemeyer. Over the years, Praça do Cruzeiro has served as a gathering place for political demonstrations, public celebrations, and cultural events.
