Palácio do Planalto: Brazil's Presidential Workplace

Visit the Palácio do Planalto in Brasília, the official workplace of Brazil's President, and marvel at its modern architecture and historical significance.

4.5

The Palácio do Planalto, meaning "Palace of the Plateau," is the seat of the Brazilian government and the official workplace of the President of Brazil. Located on the Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers Plaza) in Brasília, the palace was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated on April 21, 1960, marking the transfer of the federal capital from Rio de Janeiro to Brasília. The palace's architecture showcases Niemeyer's signature modernist style, with slender, white marble-covered columns that create an impression that the building is barely touching the ground. The building has an area of 36,000 square meters and includes four floors above ground and one below. A reflecting pool was added in 1991 to increase security and balance humidity. Several Japanese carp live in the pool. Inside, the Palácio do Planalto features artwork and furnishings that reflect Brazilian culture. The third floor houses the President's office, where daily activities and meetings take place. The palace is open to public visitation on Sundays, with guided tours available. Visitors can explore the Noble, East, and West Rooms, the Supreme Meeting Room, the Guest Room, and a showcase of art pieces.
