Praça do Cruzeiro: Brasília's Historical Heart

Praça do Cruzeiro is more than just a public square; it's a place filled with history and cultural significance in Brasília. Designed by the renowned urban planner Lúcio Costa as part of Brasília's urban plan, with ideas from Oscar Niemeyer and Juscelino Kubitschek, its strategic location was carefully planned to serve as a central point from which all main streets of the city originate, creating a key reference point. The square marks the location where the first mass was celebrated on May 3, 1957, during the construction of Brasília. The religious ceremony was led by Dom Fernando Gomes dos Santos, then Archbishop of Goiás. A replica of the original wooden cross is on display at the square, with the original cross now permanently exhibited in the Catedral Nossa Senhora Aparecida in Brasília. Juscelino Kubitschek, Brazil's president during the capital's construction, called the cross the city's true cornerstone. Praça do Cruzeiro has witnessed many significant events in Brazil's history. In 1960, it was the chosen site for Brasília's inauguration ceremony. Throughout the years, the square has been a gathering place for political demonstrations, marches, and national holiday celebrations. Today, the square continues to be a welcoming green space where residents and tourists relax, picnic, and enjoy the unique city view. Being the city's highest point, it offers a privileged spot to watch the sunset. The square also serves as a cultural center, regularly hosting cultural events, music festivals, art exhibitions, and recreational activities.
