The religious ceremony was led by Dom Fernando Gomes dos Santos, then Archbishop of Goiás. A replica of the original wooden cross is on display at the square, with the original cross now permanently exhibited in the Catedral Nossa Senhora Aparecida in Brasília. Juscelino Kubitschek, Brazil's president during the capital's construction, called the cross the city's true cornerstone.Praça do Cruzeiro has witnessed many significant events in Brazil's history. In 1960, it was the chosen site for Brasília's inauguration ceremony.
