Morro do Pai Inácio: A Chapada Diamantina Icon

Morro do Pai Inácio, rising 1,120 meters (3,675 feet), is one of the most iconic and visited attractions in Chapada Diamantina National Park. Located near the town of Palmeiras in Bahia, Brazil, this mesa-like mountain offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, plateaus, and the Morro do Camelo. The landscape resembles the mesas of the American Southwest, but with a vibrant green coating. The mountain's name is steeped in local legend, telling the tale of a slave named Inácio who had a forbidden romance with the daughter of a wealthy farmer. When she became pregnant, Inácio, fearing the repercussions of their relationship, is said to have fled to the mountain and leaped from its summit with an open umbrella, never to be seen again. The hike to the top is a relatively easy 30-45 minute climb, making it accessible to hikers of various skill levels. The trail is well-marked and has recently been upgraded with stairs and handrails in some sections. The summit provides a 360-degree view, showcasing the Vale do Cercado, Morro do Camelo, Vale dos 3 Irmãos, Serra da Bacia, and Serra do Brejão. It's an especially popular spot to watch the sunset, as the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors. While the park is open from 9 AM to 5 PM, visitors should note that it may be difficult to catch the sunrise or sunset due to these restricted hours. However, the views remain magical and worth the visit.
