Palácio São Miguel: A Historical Landmark in Fernando de Noronha

Palácio São Miguel, situated in Vila dos Remédios, is the seat of government for the Fernando de Noronha archipelago. Constructed between 1947 and 1948, the palace was built upon the remnants of the former “Directoria do Presídio,” a colonial-era structure that once served as the island's prison. The construction was carried out by local labor under the supervision of Mariano Lucena, a political prisoner at the time.The palace's architecture features a mix of colonial styles, evident in its two-story layout, grand staircase, and ogival windows. Inside, visitors can find period furniture from the mid-20th century, large canvases by José Wasth Rodrigues, and a stained-glass window depicting the archangel São Miguel, created by Aurora de Lima. The building has served various functions throughout its history, including as a residence for the Governor of the Territory of Fernando de Noronha.Today, Palácio São Miguel stands as a historical landmark, offering insights into the island's past. Although not always open for internal visits, its exterior and historical context make it a notable point of interest. The palace overlooks a cobbled square and is surrounded by palm trees and cannons, remnants from when the archipelago served as a U.S. Army base during World War II. The site is a testament to Fernando de Noronha's transformation from a penal colony to a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its natural beauty and ecological significance.
