Discover more about São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress

Located on the northern coast of Florianópolis, the São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress is a captivating historical site offering visitors a window into Brazil's colonial era. Constructed in the 1740s, the fortress formed a crucial part of a triangular defense system designed by Brigadier José da Silva Pais to protect the island from naval invasions. Positioned strategically on Ponta Grossa hill, the fortress commands a privileged view of the North Bay, nestled between the beaches of Jurerê and Pontal. The fortress's architecture is notable for its terraced design, featuring granite walls and defensive platforms. Originally armed with three batteries and 31 cannons, it controlled the ships entering Santa Catarina's coast. A unique feature is its chapel, the only one found in the island's fortresses and still used by the local community. The Casa do Comandante, a two-story building, is another significant structure. Today, the fortress is a national heritage site managed by the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). Restored in 1992 and 2023, it serves as a museum, with exhibits detailing the region's military history. Visitors can explore the ancient walls, admire the panoramic coastline views, and learn about the lives of those who once defended the island.
