Discover more about São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress

Perched on the rocky Ponta Grossa hill, between Forte Beach and Jurerê in Florianópolis, the São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress is a captivating landmark with a rich history. Constructed between 1740 and 1744, it formed a crucial part of a defensive triangle, together with the fortresses of Santa Cruz de Anhatomirim and Santo Antônio de Ratones, designed by Brigadier José da Silva Paes to protect the northern bay of Santa Catarina Island from foreign invasions. Over the centuries, the fortress witnessed periods of strategic importance and eventual abandonment after a Spanish invasion in 1777. In 1938, it was recognized as a National Historic and Artistic Heritage site, initiating restoration efforts. Since 1989, the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) has been responsible for its maintenance and administration, undertaking extensive excavation and restoration projects. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved grounds, including the Commander's House, which features exhibits on the daily life of the fortress residents and archaeological finds. The São Caetano Battery, a later addition to bolster the fortress's eastern defenses, is also a point of interest. The chapel, dedicated to São José, stands as the only structure within the island's defensive system that has continuously served its original purpose. The fortress provides stunning panoramic views of the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean.
