Discover more about Ponte Metálica

The Ponte Metálica, located on Iracema Beach in Fortaleza, stands as a reminder of the city's early port days. Constructed with a metal frame and initially a wooden floor, the bridge earned its name from its iron structure. The bridge's construction began on December 18, 1902, and it was opened on May 26, 1906, serving as Fortaleza's port until the 1950s.Originally, the Ponte Metálica was used for loading and unloading cargo and passengers, who were transported to and from ships by smaller vessels due to the shallow waters. The structure included mobile stairs and cranes to facilitate these operations. Over time, the metal structure deteriorated and was rebuilt with concrete in 1928, under the supervision of engineer Francisco Sabóia de Albuquerque. It was then renamed Viaduto Moreira da Rocha.Today, the Ponte Metálica is a popular tourist attraction, known as Ponte dos Ingleses (Englishmen's Bridge). Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the coastline, especially stunning sunsets. While it no longer functions as a commercial port, its historical significance and picturesque setting make it a must-see landmark in Fortaleza.
