Discover more about Fortress of Our Lady of the Assumption

The Fortress of Our Lady of the Assumption, nestled on the Pajeú creek's mouth, is one of Fortaleza's most significant historical landmarks. Dating back to 1649, this imposing structure is a testament to colonial military power and a vibrant cultural monument. Initially, the Ceará coastline faced frequent threats from Dutch invasions. The first defensive structure, Fort São Sebastião, was demolished due to its fragile construction. In 1649, the Dutch built Forte Schoonemborch, asserting control over the region. However, in 1654, the Portuguese reclaimed Ceará, renaming it Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Assunção. The city of Fortaleza expanded from this stronghold. The fortress's current layout, rebuilt in 1812 under Lieutenant Colonel Engineer António José da Silva Paulet, is a near-perfect square. Its four bulwarks are named in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption, Saint Joseph, Dom João, and Prince of Beira. The fortress was heavily armed, growing from five cannons to over 30 by the mid-19th century. Beyond its military role, the fortress holds cultural significance. It housed Bárbara de Alencar, regarded as Brazil's first political prisoner. It also houses the Museum and Pantheon of General Sampaio, the patron of the Infantry branch of the Brazilian Army.
