Discover more about Iguazú National Park

Iguazú National Park, established in 1934, safeguards a vital part of Argentina's natural heritage: the majestic Iguazú Falls and the surrounding subtropical jungle. The park spans 677 square kilometers (261 sq mi) and adjoins the Iguaçu National Park in Brazil, forming a protected area of immense ecological significance. The area has a rich history, inhabited by hunter-gatherers 10,000 years ago before the Guaraní people introduced agriculture. In 1542, Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca became the first European to witness the falls, followed by Jesuit missions in 1609. The heart of the park is the semi-circular falls, boasting a height of 80 meters (262 ft) and a diameter of 2,700 meters (8,858 ft). The falls are comprised of approximately 275 individual cascades, with 80% located on the Argentine side. The most famous of these is the Devil's Throat (Garganta del Diablo), a U-shaped cataract that marks the border between Argentina and Brazil and offers an unforgettable sensory experience. The park is a haven for biodiversity, home to over 2,000 species of vascular plants and around 400 species of birds, including the elusive Harpy Eagle. It also shelters various wild cat species, tapirs, jaguars, monkeys, coatis, alligators, and the broad-snouted caiman. Iguazú National Park is committed to accessibility, with over 90% of the trails adapted for visitors with disabilities. Services include free wheelchair rentals, ramps, accessible restrooms, and an ecological train that connects the main areas of the park. The park offers a range of trails and circuits, including the Upper Circuit, Lower Circuit, and the Macuco Trail, each providing unique perspectives of the falls and the surrounding jungle.
