Discover more about Christ the Redeemer

Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) is an iconic Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Perched atop Corcovado Mountain, its outstretched arms span 92 feet (28 meters) and the statue stands 98 feet (30 meters) high, becoming a global symbol of Christianity and a Brazilian cultural icon. The statue's history dates back to the 19th century when the idea of placing a Christian monument on Corcovado Mountain was first suggested. However, the project didn't materialize until after World War I, when concerns about a perceived decline in religious faith prompted the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro to propose the statue's construction. Designed by Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by Paul Landowski, with contributions from Albert Caquot and Gheorghe Leonida, the statue was constructed from 1922 to 1931 using reinforced concrete and soapstone. Today, Christ the Redeemer is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, drawing millions of visitors each year. Visitors can reach the statue by train, van, or even a challenging hike through Tijuca National Park. At the base of the statue, a small chapel consecrated to Our Lady of Aparecida, the patron saint of Brazil, offers a space for prayer and reflection. The monument symbolizes peace, welcome, and the love of Christ, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Rio de Janeiro.
