Discover more about Gruta da Imprensa

Gruta da Imprensa is more than just a pretty viewpoint; it's a place steeped in Rio's history. In the early 20th century, Avenida Niemeyer was revamped to welcome King Albert of Belgium, including the construction of the Rei Alberto Viaduct. In 1922, a plateau along the avenue was opened and became known as the Gruta da Imprensa. This space served as a base for journalists covering the exhilarating Circuito da Gávea, a street racing event that drew massive crowds between 1933 and 1954.Over time, the grotto became a popular leisure spot, but it eventually fell into disuse. Ironically, it was the collapse of the Ciclovia Tim Maia, a cycling path built above it in 2016, that brought renewed attention to the Gruta da Imprensa. Although the cycle path has been rebuilt, the grotto and its surroundings remain somewhat neglected, offering a raw, off-the-beaten-path experience for those who venture there. Today, visitors can still appreciate the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and reflect on the grotto's unique connection to Rio's sporting and media history.
