Discover more about Palácio das Laranjeiras

Nestled in the Laranjeiras neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Palácio das Laranjeiras stands as a symbol of history, architecture, and political significance. Constructed between 1909 and 1913, the palace was originally the residence of Eduardo Guinle, a wealthy businessman, and designed by architects Armando Carlos da Silva Telles and Joseph Gire in the Louis XIII style. The palace boasts a strong European influence, particularly in its French-inspired decor, reminiscent of the Palace of Versailles. Inside, visitors can explore the entrance hall, the Louis XIV Salon, the Music Room with its piano inspired by Marie Antoinette's harpsichord, the Smoking Room, and the Dining Room. The library houses a faithful copy of King Louis XV of France's Bureau du Roi, while the Empire Salon and the Regency Gallery are also highlights. The palace also features the Bourdoir, the first intimate space in the house, associated with the feminine space, in addition to the Louis XV Room, the Children's Room, the Marble Bathroom and the Elevator, one of the first installed in residences in South America, decorated in Rococo style. In 1947, the Brazilian Federal Government acquired the Palácio das Laranjeiras to host foreign dignitaries. Juscelino Kubitschek, who served as president from 1956 to 1961, chose it as his official residence, and in 1975, it became the official residence of the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Today, the palace continues to host political events and welcomes visitors to explore its historical and cultural heritage. The surrounding Eduardo Guinle Park, with its gardens, lake, and original landscaping attributed to F. Cochet, adds to the palace's charm, providing a tranquil escape within the bustling city.
