The museum's creation was driven by the Jewish community's need to safeguard its history and culture. Although Jewish individuals have been recorded in the city since the 1830s, the community emerged in the early 20th century. The museum's collection includes the Feldman Collection, featuring 69 Hanukkah lamps and other objects made by Joseph Feldman. The Holocaust is represented by photographs, documents, and objects, including a concentration camp uniform. The museum also organizes special exhibitions, seminars, and events.The museum fosters academic research about immigration and sponsors annual writing contests for students. It also has a Study Center, with research on Jewish immigration and the Holocaust, a video collection, and a thematic library.
