Discover more about Pedra Bonita

Pedra Bonita, meaning "Beautiful Stone," is a mountain peak in Rio de Janeiro's Tijuca National Park, offering one of the most rewarding and accessible panoramic views of the city. Standing at 693 meters (2,274 feet), it provides vistas of iconic landmarks such as Pedra da Gávea, the beaches of São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca, and the distant Christ the Redeemer statue. The hike to the summit is considered easy to moderate, making it a popular choice for both locals and tourists. The trail is approximately 2.6 km (1.6 miles) round trip, with an elevation gain of 290 meters (951 feet), typically taking around 1.5 hours to complete. The path winds through the lush Atlantic Forest, offering shade and glimpses of local flora and fauna. In addition to the views, Pedra Bonita is known for its hang gliding and paragliding ramp, offering a unique perspective as you watch enthusiasts launch into the sky. The ramp area also provides excellent photo opportunities. The summit itself is a large open space, providing ample room to explore and soak in the scenery. Be aware that the area offers little sun protection, so sunscreen is recommended. Visitors should note that Pedra Bonita is part of Tijuca National Park, and park rules must be followed. The park's opening hours are generally from 8 am to 5 pm, with extended hours until 6 pm during the summer. The last entry to the trail is at 4 pm to allow enough time to return before closing.
