Pedra do Sino: The Bell Rock

Pedra do Sino, or Bell Rock, stands as the crowning point of the Serra dos Órgãos National Park, reaching an altitude of 2,275 meters (7,464 feet). Located in Guapimirim, Rio de Janeiro, this peak attracts mountaineers and adventurers from across Brazil and the world. The challenging trek to the summit offers unparalleled views, encompassing Guanabara Bay, the city of Rio de Janeiro, and parts of the Paraíba Valley. The main access to Pedra do Sino is through the Teresópolis entrance of the national park. The trail extends for approximately 11 km (6.8 miles), typically requiring five to six hours of hiking. The initial section of the trail is relatively gentle, passing through a forest with remnants of imperial-era paving. Along the way, hikers can stop at two waterfalls for rest and refreshment. The final ascent is steep and rocky, demanding physical fitness and proper hiking gear. At the summit, hikers are rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama. The experience is particularly magical at sunrise, when the first light illuminates the landscape. During winter, temperatures can drop to freezing, with frost occasionally coating the vegetation. The park limits access to 100 hikers per day, helping to preserve the natural environment. Pedra do Sino also marks the end of the traditional Petrópolis-Teresópolis traverse, a multi-day trek through the Serra dos Órgãos.
