Discover more about Copacabana Fort

Copacabana Fort, inaugurated in 1914, was built to bolster the defense of Guanabara Bay. In 1986, its military function ended, transforming it into the Army History Museum and a cultural space. The fort played a key role in the 1922 'Tenente Revolt', a military uprising. The fort features thick stone walls and powerful artillery guns. It consists of two armored cupolas, one holding a pair of 305 mm Krupp cannons, and the other a pair of 190 mm Krupp cannons. The name of the turret with the 305mm guns is "Duque de Caxias", and the guns are named "Barroso" and "Osório". Today, visitors can explore the Army Historical Museum, which showcases Brazil's military history through various exhibits. The museum houses exhibits of artillery, photographs, and documents essential to the fortress's legacy. The site also offers panoramic views of Copacabana and Diabo beaches. Two cafes, including a branch of the renowned Confeitaria Colombo, provide refreshments with a view. The fort maintains its original features, such as the 12-meter thick external walls facing the sea. The museum's collection includes more than 15,000 pieces.
