Its entrance, about 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles) wide, is marked by the iconic Sugar Loaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) on the west and Papagaio Peak on the east.The bay's name originates from the Tupi language, meaning "bosom of the sea". First encountered by Europeans in 1502, the Portuguese initially mistook it for a river, naming it Rio de Janeiro (January River). The city of Rio de Janeiro later adopted its name from the bay.Guanabara Bay is steeped in history. In 1555, French colonists invaded the region, building Fort Coligny on Serigipe Island.
