The surrounding park also features architectural elements like archways and bridges.The Jardim Botânico itself was founded in 1808 by King John VI of Portugal. The gardens span 137 hectares and contain over 6,500 plant species. The gardens also feature other attractions, such as the Avenue of Royal Palms and the Orchidarium.
