Discover more about Elevador Lacerda

The Elevador Lacerda, inaugurated in 1873, stands as the first urban elevator in the world, revolutionizing urban mobility in Salvador. Conceived by Antônio de Lacerda, it addresses the geographical challenge of Salvador's division into two levels. Originally called the Elevador da Conceição, it was strategically located near the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia. The elevator's construction was a family affair, with Antônio Francisco de Lacerda, his father, playing a key role, along with his brother Augusto Frederico de Lacerda. In 1896, it was renamed Elevador Lacerda, honoring its creator. In 1906, the elevator adopted an electric system, and in 1930, it received its Art Deco facade. Today, the 72-meter-tall structure has four cabins that transport passengers between the Praça Tomé de Souza in the upper city and the Praça Cairu in the lower city. Each cabin can carry up to 32 passengers. The Elevador Lacerda is more than just a mode of transport; it's a historical and cultural symbol of Salvador. A ride on the elevator provides an immersive experience into the city's history and culture, offering a unique perspective of Salvador.
