Discover more about Escadaria do Patapio

Escadaria do Patapio, located in São Paulo's Vila Madalena neighborhood, is more than just a set of stairs; it's a vibrant art installation and a testament to community collaboration. The staircase, originally a simple passage known as Escadão do Jardim das Bandeiras, was transformed in 2015 during the Design Weekend event. Dozens of artists, local residents, and visitors joined forces to adorn the steps with colorful ceramic tiles and create murals on the adjacent walls. The beautification project was conceived by Brazilian plastic artist Élcio Torres, in partnership with Projeto Azul and a local ceramic company that supplied the tiles. The result is a mesmerizing display of creativity, with whimsical figures, Portuguese slogans, and graffiti art covering nearly every surface. The staircase is named in honor of Patápio Silva, a celebrated Brazilian flutist who died young. In contrast to the crowded Escadaria Selarón in Rio de Janeiro, Escadaria do Patapio offers a more relaxed and intimate experience. Visitors can take their time exploring the artwork, snapping photos, and soaking in the lively atmosphere of the surrounding neighborhood. The location is also near Batman's Alley, another open-air gallery known for its street art. Weekends sometimes feature musical events, adding to the area's appeal.
