Discover more about Largo de São Francisco

Largo de São Francisco, located in the Sé district of São Paulo, is a square steeped in history and academic tradition. It is considered one of the main Baroque architectural complexes in the city. In the 1640s, the Convent of Saint Francis was established here, marking one of the oldest religious sites in São Paulo. The square is home to the Law School of the University of São Paulo (FDUSP), which has occupied the former convent premises since 1828. The site was initially deemed unsuitable for the convent due to water scarcity and wind exposure. Construction finally began in 1642, with the convent inaugurated in 1647. Over time, the area transformed, and in 1930, the original baroque convent was demolished to make way for a neo-colonial style building, which still houses the Law School today. Today, Largo de São Francisco is a bustling square surrounded by historical buildings, including the Church of Saint Francis and the Church of the Third Order of Penance. It serves as a meeting point for students, locals, and tourists alike, offering a glimpse into São Paulo's rich cultural and architectural heritage.
