It is named after Lieutenant General José Arouche de Toledo Rendon, an important figure who owned a large part of the central area of São Paulo. Over the years, the square has been known by various names, including Largo do Ouvidor, Largo da Artilharia, and Praça Alexandre Herculano.Largo do Arouche is also recognized as a center of diversity, having been a stronghold for LGBTQIAP+ social groups since the 1940s.
