Largo do Arouche: A Flower-Filled Square with a Vibrant History

Largo do Arouche is a traditional square located in the central region of São Paulo, in the República district. It's known as Flower Square (Praça das Flores) or Flower Market (Mercado das Flores), thanks to the numerous florists who have set up shop there since 1914. The square has a rich history, dating back to around 1820 when it served as a military exercise ground. It is named after Lieutenant General José Arouche de Toledo Rendon, an important figure who owned a large part of the central area of São Paulo. Over the years, the square has been known by various names, including Largo do Ouvidor, Largo da Artilharia, and Praça Alexandre Herculano. Largo do Arouche is also recognized as a center of diversity, having been a stronghold for LGBTQIAP+ social groups since the 1940s. This occupation has persisted through the years, resisting the military dictatorship in the fight for sexual and gender diversity rights. The Caneca de Prata Bar, founded in 1960, is a symbol of this resistance. Today, Largo do Arouche is a bustling social hub where locals and tourists gather to enjoy its lively atmosphere. The square is surrounded by remarkable architecture that reflects São Paulo's diverse history. Visitors can admire sculptures by renowned artists, such as Luís Christophe's 'The Girl and the Calf' and Claude Dunin's bust of Afonso d'Escragnolle Taunay.
