Parque Burle Marx: A Green Oasis in São Paulo

Parque Burle Marx, located in the Vila Andrade district of São Paulo, is a 138,000 square meter urban park offering a tranquil escape from the city. Inaugurated in 1995, the park is named after Roberto Burle Marx, the celebrated Brazilian landscape architect who designed its gardens. The park's history is intertwined with that of Chácara Tangará, a property once owned by businessman Baby Pignatari. Pignatari commissioned Oscar Niemeyer to design a mansion and Burle Marx to create its gardens in the 1940s. Although the mansion was never completed, Burle Marx's gardens were preserved and later incorporated into the park. Parque Burle Marx provides a contemplative environment focused on preserving a remnant of São Paulo's Atlantic Forest. Visitors can explore walking trails, admire the Jabuticabeira Forest, relax by the Lake District, and enjoy the large central lawn. The park also features a playground, a community garden, and a space for events. Historical and architectural highlights include the Casa de Taipa e Pilão, a traditional rammed earth house, and the Burle Marx Garden, showcasing the landscape architect's signature style. The park is managed by the Aron Birmann Foundation, ensuring the preservation of its landscape design and environmental education programs. Unlike some other parks in São Paulo, Parque Burle Marx does not offer biking or ball-playing areas, maintaining its focus on peaceful appreciation of nature.
