From the center of Veranópolis, take the road towards Vila Azul. The waterfall is approximately 6 km away. The road is paved until close to the waterfall. Follow the signs for 'Cascata da Usina Velha' on Google Maps. There is no entrance fee. Parking is available near the start of the trail. Be aware that parking might be limited.

Public Transport

From the Veranópolis bus terminal, take a local bus towards Vila Azul. Check local bus schedules for accurate timings, as service may be infrequent. From where the bus drops you off, follow the road towards the waterfall. The final part of the journey might require a walk of approximately 1-2 km. Bus fare is approximately R$5-R$10. There is no entrance fee.

Overview

Cascata da Usina Velha is a stunning waterfall located in the countryside of Veranópolis, Rio Grande do Sul. This hidden gem, approximately 6 km from the city center, is formed by the old dam of the Retiro River. The waterfall has two longitudinal drops, one of 7 meters and another of 6 meters.Historically, the site housed the first power generation plant in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, inaugurated in 1912. The plant powered the Vila Alfredo Chaves with 108 lamps, marking a significant milestone in the region's development. Today, the ruins of this old plant add a historical touch to the natural beauty of the area.Visitors can enjoy a short 5-minute walk along a trail to reach the base of the waterfall. The trail passes through native forest and uneven terrain. The waterfall forms a natural pool that is great for swimming. The area is public and free to access, but it has no infrastructure such as bathrooms or food services.
