Its name, meaning "Windmills Park," harkens back to the 18th century when Antônio Martins Barbosa, a miner from Minas Gerais, established a windmill in the area. Before becoming a park in 1972, the area was home to the Independência racetrack, a popular turf venue in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
