Discover more about Istana Darussalam

Istana Darussalam, located in Bandar Seri Begawan, is a significant historical landmark in Brunei. Constructed in the 1940s, it served as the residence of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III and is the birthplace of the current Sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah. The palace is situated on the banks of the Kedayan River and exemplifies indigenous Malay architecture. Originally built with wood in 1947, concrete was later used to reinforce the structure. Istana Darussalam witnessed several important events, including the birth of royal family members. In 1947, the lower part of the building functioned as a private office for Sultan Omar Ali. The royal family moved to Istana Darul Hana in 1951, and Istana Darussalam was used to house guests. The palace is no longer used as a residence, but representatives from the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque still perform the tahlil ritual there every Friday. The building's green and brown exterior reflects traditional Malay house architecture, contrasting with the surrounding village homes. The Darussalam Jetty, providing royal entry from the Kedayan River, adds to the palace's historical significance. Although the palace interior is not generally accessible to the public, its exterior and grounds offer a glimpse into Brunei's regal heritage. Visitors can appreciate the architecture and serene atmosphere while learning about the Brunei monarchy.
