Discover more about Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

Dominating the skyline of Bandar Seri Begawan, the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is a sight to behold. Completed in 1958, this mosque is named after Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei, and is considered one of the most beautiful mosques in Southeast Asia. He was also known as the 'Architect of Modern Brunei'. The mosque's design is a captivating blend of Mughal and Italian architectural styles. Its most prominent feature is the gleaming golden dome, made of 3.3 million pieces of gold Venetian mosaics, which reflects the sunlight and can be seen from virtually anywhere in the city. The interior is equally lavish, with Italian marble floors and walls, English chandeliers and carpets from Saudi Arabia. The main minaret, standing at 52 meters high, is the tallest structure in central Bandar Seri Begawan and offers panoramic views of the city. The mosque is situated in the middle of a man-made lagoon, creating a serene and picturesque setting. A replica of a 16th-century royal barge, known as the Mahligai Barge, sits in the lagoon and was used for Quran reading competitions. The mosque has been the site of many important events in Brunei's history, including royal weddings and national day celebrations. Visitors are welcome to explore the exterior and surrounding gardens, but photography is not allowed inside the mosque. Modest dress is required.
