Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park, located in the Tutong District, is a treasure trove of natural beauty and cultural significance. Approximately 70 kilometers from Bandar Seri Begawan, the park encompasses 7,800 hectares, with the centerpiece being the S-shaped Tasek Merimbun, Brunei's largest natural lake. The lake's distinctive dark water, a result of tannins from decaying leaves, creates a unique ecosystem supporting diverse flora and fauna. The park is home to various habitats, including mangroves, freshwater swamp forests, peat swamps, and lowland mixed dipterocarp forests. It is also an Important Bird Area, hosting over 200 bird species, including the endangered Storm's stork. Culturally, Tasek Merimbun is intertwined with the local Dusun community, who have inhabited the area for centuries and consider the lake and surrounding forests sacred. Visitors can explore the Balai Purun (Purun Hall), Dusun House, and Pulau Jeludong, an archaeological site with ancient ancestral remains. Recreational activities include boat rides, nature trails, and birdwatching. Tasek Merimbun was declared the first ASEAN Heritage Park in 1984, recognizing its importance in biodiversity conservation and cultural heritage. The park offers chalet facilities for researchers and provides opportunities to learn about the area's unique ecosystems and conservation efforts.
